Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2006 ASCO Annual Meeting Proceedings

Part I. Vol 24, No. 18S (June 20 Supplement), 2006: 17117

  1. Malignant tissue specimens were obtained surgically at several different institutions from 60 patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) .
  2. Specimens were submitted to Weisenthal Cancer Group for Functional Tumor Cell Profiling – a method to test for cellular resistance or sensitivity to specific anti-cancer agents, including gefitinib.
  3. Test results were reported prospectively to referring physicians for use in individualized treatment planning.
  4. Patient survival data were obtained.  For 30 patients, it is not known what type of treatment was received after testing.  For 29 patients, post-test treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors  - either Gefitinib (IressaŽ) or Erlotinib (TarcevaŽ) - was documented.

Conclusion: Weisenthal Cancer Group prospectively identified patients who subsequently benefited from a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (gefitinib or erlotinib) as well as patients who did not benefit from a tyrosine kinase inhibitor.  Differences in survival were highly statistically significant.  Click here to see the abstract with data.
