-
Malignant tissue specimens were obtained
surgically at several different institutions from 60 patients with
non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) .
-
Specimens were submitted to Weisenthal
Cancer Group for Functional Tumor Cell Profiling – a method to test for
cellular resistance or sensitivity to specific anti-cancer agents,
including gefitinib.
-
Test results were reported prospectively
to referring physicians for use in individualized treatment planning.
-
Patient survival data were obtained.
For 30 patients, it is not known what type of treatment was
received after testing. For 29
patients, post-test treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors
- either Gefitinib (IressaŽ) or Erlotinib (TarcevaŽ) - was
documented.
Conclusion: Weisenthal Cancer
Group prospectively identified patients who subsequently benefited from a
tyrosine kinase inhibitor (gefitinib or erlotinib) as well as patients who
did not benefit from a tyrosine kinase inhibitor.
Differences in survival were highly statistically significant.
